Who we are

The Acadiana Brief (“we,” “us,” or “our”) operates acadianabrief.com and its subdomains, including acadianabrief.com — a personalized local-news service for the Acadiana region of Louisiana. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. Questions? Email privacy@acadianabrief.com.

Information we collect

  • Account & subscription info you give us: email address, first name, parish, delivery frequency, the interest topics and newsletter sections you select, and (for businesses) business name, contact details, and the goals you submit through our forms.
  • Email engagement: whether an edition was delivered, opened, or a link in it was clicked. We use a standard tracking pixel and link redirects for this.
  • Referral data: if you arrive through a reader's referral link, we record the referring code.
  • Technical basics: IP address and browser information used for security, rate-limiting, and spam prevention on our forms.
  • Public local information: our monitoring collects publicly available local signals (permits, event listings, business openings, public meeting agendas, public social-media pages). This is content about the community, not about our readers.

How we use it

  • To build and deliver your personalized newsletter editions.
  • To honor your preferences (topics, sections, frequency, pauses, unsubscribes).
  • To measure what's useful — open and click rates improve what we send.
  • To respond to business inquiries and operate the business directory and Business Signals.
  • To prevent abuse of our forms and protect the service.

We do not sell your personal information.

Cookies & local storage

We use a small number of first-party cookies and browser storage: your in-progress signup selections (local storage), a referral cookie (ain_ref) when you arrive via a referral link, a demo-mode cookie for the business portal, and authentication cookies if you sign in to the business portal. We don't use third-party advertising cookies.

Service providers

We use a small set of vendors to run the service, each receiving only what they need: Google Firebase (database & authentication), Resend (email delivery), Apify (monitoring of public local sources), and Anthropic (AI relevance scoring of public local signals — not your personal data).

Data retention

We keep subscriber information while your subscription is active. If you unsubscribe, we retain your email and unsubscribe status so we don't email you again, unless you request full deletion. Engagement events are retained for analytics and may be aggregated. Business leads are retained while relevant to an ongoing relationship.

Your choices & rights

  • Unsubscribe anytime via the link in any email or at /settings.
  • Update your topics, sections, frequency, and details at /settings.
  • Delete your data entirely — see our data deletion instructions.
  • Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights (access, correction, portability). Email us and we'll honor them.

Children

The Acadiana Brief is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Security

Data is stored with access controls (row-level security and server-only service keys), transmitted over HTTPS, and unsubscribe/manage links are cryptographically signed. No system is perfectly secure, but we design for least access.

Changes to this policy

If we make material changes, we'll update the date above and, where appropriate, note the change in the newsletter. Continued use of the service after changes means you accept the updated policy.
